Nightly Follow Me

Nightly follow me fair and lightly
Over the gulf of my sorrow;
Light my path
Through darkest morrow.
Wings of cloud enfold my sun.

Dressed in stillness, step from the forest,
People the lands of my loneliness;
Printless sands
Desire your footsteps.
Dark the stars that light your way

But come to me now and come to me sadly,
Sad for the summerless flower;
Shine within this leafless bower.
Blossoms fade as autumn wills.

Come to me lone and come to me lovely,
Lost are the valleys of summer;
Owl-bright snows
Of winter gather.
Whiteness may such blackness bring!

The eye of the ocean trembles with tears, love,
Everything fears her devotion;
Storm-tossed waves
Are love in motion.
But deep within the heart is calm.

Nightly follow me fair and lightly
Over the gulf of my sorrow;
Light my path
Through darkest morrow.
Wings of cloud enfold my sun.
