23 Squadron diary

Entry for Monday/Tuesday 13/14 August 1956:

' . . . Again A Flight managed to achieve quite a full programme of day and night. This was added to when two aircraft were scrambled after a strange object had been picked up by Lakenheath G.C.A. The GCA became a G.C.I. and several attempts were made to intercept the "object" but as it was standing . . . it was most difficult and nothing was seen by either of the crews, and it was later decided that the object must have been a balloon.

'On being scrambled after this target Flying Officer Arthur lost his wing tanks. It is thought that this was due to a faulty switch-guard . . .'
