Reconstruction of SAC IR-2-56, August 17 1956 (page 1)

BOI-485 from SAC, Lakenheath, was bounced on from the 7th Air Division, South Ruislip, on August 17, redesignated IDO-7-3351 and addressed to HQ, Strategic Air Command (CINCSAC), Offut AFB, Nebraska and to CINCUSAFE, Wiesbaden, Germany.

SAC IR-2-56 is essentially a paper copy of IDO-7-3351 (i.e. not a telex) re-sent in AF Form 112 format as an Information Report from HQ SAC, Nebraska to an undisclosed recipient to whom, as stated by Major Childs in the 'Summary' box, IDO-7-3351 had not been properly addressed as required by AFR 200-2. Air Force Regulation 200-2 indeed requires all reports outside the Zone of Interior to be transmitted direct to Director of Intelligence, HQ USAF Washington DC. Teletype IDO-7-3351 was not thus transmitted; hence we can infer that the addressee of IR-2-56 is D/I USAF, Washington.

It is noteable that IDO-7-3351 was received by CINCSAC in truncated form. Major Childs remarks at the end: "Report did not include sub-paragraph 10, 11 and 12." In fact it does not include most of paragraph 9 either. Thus the description of the interception action by the RAF Venom, and the preparing intelligence officer's preliminary analysis, are missing. The break point in paragraph 9 coincides with the end of page 6 in the original telex BOI-485 from SAC Lakenheath. The same three pages are missing from the telex version of IDO-7-3351 retransmitted from CINCUSAFE, Wiesbaden at 1115Z August 21.
