Note of telephone interview with Flying Officer Peter 'Digger' Dell

Dave Clarke

"We [ie the squadron day flight] would have gone off duty around 8pm on the 13th, ie night of the 13th-14th of the 8th, we were off on NFT [night fighter training], medium level PI [practice interceptions], about 25-30,000 feet from Waterbeach . . . pilot was F/O George Sandman . . . . Neatishead contacted us and asked us to look for something . . . it was at 80,000 feet or above. I looked up at this thing, it was very high and we concluded it was a meteorological balloon. We broadcast back to Neatishead that was what it was. 18.10 flight 1 hour, we landed 20 past 7."
